Dear friends,

I am very excited for The Boston Experimental Theatre Company’s (BETC) new project, an adaptation from two of Artaud’s plays Spurt of Blood and To Have Done With The Judgment Of God. BETC is presenting a night of experimental videos, live music, art installations, live painting, and experimental theatre all influenced by the writings of Mr. Antonin Artaud at Machine Nightclub. The bar and art exhibition will be open at 7 pm, and the Theatre Production starts at 7:30 pm.

BETC’s new production is a result of five months of intense workshops at Boston Experimental Theatre in collaboration with Philippe Lejeune (Glass Project), to study and practice Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty through a series of workshops and productions, including Harvard Yard Festival, which was a freestyle immersive theatre.

I met Philippe Lejeune when BETC was performing The Misunderstanding at the BCA in September 2011 and Philippe was exhibiting pieces of The Glass Project on the plaza outside the theater.  I was instantly fascinated by his work and ideas.  Months of meetings and conversations followed and finally in March 2012 we started the current workshop featuring Philippe’s artwork.   We brought our workshop to public spaces, festivals such as Harvard Yard and Figment Boston. The Spurt of Blood project results from a series of exercises;  we create an environment in the rehearsal room that encourages actors, designers, and musicians to discover the relationships between their bodies, their imaginations, space, light, sound, and most importantly others. Through this process, actors explore ideas and emotions and allow relationships to grow.  The hope is to develop the show organically from these intimate and intense atmospheres. In this production topics of  Identity, self-image, love, and their relationships with sex, food and religions will be explored all through the writings of Antonin Artaud.

We are excited to bring this workshop to the public and encourage you to bring your imagination with you.  We hope to learn from you, both as spectators and actors, and continue from there. Click HERE to watch the final production
